The UAF Percussion Ensembles, under the direction of Dr. Scott Deal will present a concert on Friday, April 8, in UAF’s Charles W. Davis Concert Hall at 8 p.m.

The Percussion Ensemble will perform music from cultures around the world that include Mexico, Brazil, Ghana, and the U.S.The World Beat Ensemble will perform hand drumming music from Africa.

In a special guest appearance, the UAF Music Technology students will be having their computer-realized works performed. Additionally, Deal will be performing several solo works utilizing percussion, electronics, and multi-media. One of the works to be performed by Deal will have a computer animation created by UAF Computer Arts Professor Miho Aoki.

Now in its 10th year, the UAF percussion program offers studies leading to a bachelor of music, music education, bachelor of arts, and master of arts in percussion degrees. In addition to developing professional music careers, graduates of the program have distinguished themselves nationally.

Some of the awards include recognition for excellence in Downbeat Magazine, finalist of the Music Teacher’s National Association Collegiate Artist Competition, and winner of the 2003 Percussive Arts Society International Composition Contest. Most recently, the ensemble was honored by being invited to perform a concert at the MENC (Music Educator’s National Conference) Northwest Meeting in Bellevue, Wash. The group was selected from auditions of ensembles in all musical genres.
