The UAF Reserve Officers Training Corps iscommissioning class of 2005 Officers at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 14 in the Charles W. Davis Concert Hall on the UAF Campus.
Six graduating seniors of the University of Alaska Fairbanks will become Army Officers. Commissioning is the culminating event for ROTC cadets as they become Second Lieutenants in the United States Army.
The guest speaker will be University of Alaska President Mark Hamilton. President Hamilton, who is also a retired Major General, will administer the oath of office.
A Commissioned Officer is a leader and manager in the Army who holds grade and office under a commission issued by the President of the United States. A soldier who has been appointed to the grade of Second Lieutenant or higher is a commissioned officer. Ranks, in order of progression, of commissioned officers are Second Lieutenant, First Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier General, Major General, Lieutenant General, General, and General of the Army.
A commissioned officer’s primary function is to plan and conduct training and operations and lead soldiers. An officer must have a college degree in order to be commissioned.
