During the evening hours and on weekends throughout the summer the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will be using the Butrovich parking lot as a listening post for their Chena River Patrols.
Jeanne Nason, Commander of the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary explained that marine radios need a direct line of sight to operate. The volunteer organization will be setting up a marine radio with an eight foot antenna attached to it in the Butrovich parking lot.
This is a test and Commander Nason is hopeful that the Butrovich parking lot will be high enough to allow marine communications along the Chena River from the Tanana River to the Chena Flood Control.
If this is successful it will allow for quick communications from the river to emergency personnel on land in the Fairbanks North Star Borough area.
