UAF reaches out to students in Gulf Coast states

The University of Alaska Fairbanks will accept students from Gulf Coast states who have been displaced as a result of hurricane Katrina. UAF Chancellor Steve Jones announced Sept. 2 that those students who decide to attend UAF will not be charged late registration or application fees and will be admitted through Sept. 15, 2005. Resident tuition will also be offered.

"There may be students attending Tulane, the University of New Orleans or other colleges in the affected region who are from Alaska or students in the region interested in transferring to UAF," said Jones. "We’ll do all we can to help those students get registered and settled in to minimize the disruption to their education so they don’t miss a term or a full academic year. If you know of Alaskan students whose university is affected, please alert them to our offer."

The UAF community is also exploring ways to raise money for hurricane victims. One fund-raising event during Starvation Gulch is already in the works. Proceeds from an upcoming comedy event will be donated to the disaster relief.

"UAF joins the rest of the nation in looking for ways to assist victims of the hurricane," said Jones.
