Dr. Raul Caetano, of the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, will present a seminar on the epidemiology of substance abuse among ethnic minorities in the general population and in treatment populations Friday, Oct. 7, at the University of Alaska Fairbanks as part of the Institute of Arctic Biology’s Life Sciences Seminar Series.
Caetano, a medical physician and professor of epidemiology, will discuss the clinical presentation of alcohol dependence, accepted concepts of substance abuse as a disease, and concepts of alcoholism as a disease among ethnic minorities. He will also focus on the existing research literature with clinical samples, especially addressing treatment effectiveness among ethnic minorities.
Caetano’s expertise and research interests include domestic violence epidemiology; epidemiological methods; epidemiology of substance abuse; drinking and alcohol-related problems among U.S. ethnic groups; general population surveys; and epidemiology of alcohol abuse and dependence.
Caetano is an assistant dean and professor of epidemiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, School of Public Health, Dallas Regional Campus and an adjunct professor of psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, Southwestern Medical School.
The Life Sciences Seminar featuring Caetano will be from 3:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. in the Elvey Building, Elvey Auditorium, room 214 on the UAF campus.
