Fairbanks, Alaska--Victoria "Torie" Foote has been named the new director of the University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Rural & Community Development Health Programs.

In the position, Foote will lead the program and develop plans that respond to statewide training needs in the allied and behavioral health fields. She will collaborate with rural campus directors, health corporations, school districts and health industry officials to assess and address those needs. Foote was formerly the program’s assistant director.

"I am pleased with Torie’s decision to take the leadership role," said Bernice Joseph, the college’s executive dean. "She has the expertise and management skills necessary to move this department forward."

Foote has more than 10 years of experience working in rural Alaska. She has worked as an assistant general manager of Bethel Broadcasting, a trainer for the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation and a lead counselor/trainer for an alcohol treatment program in Bethel. She also serves as a member of the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly.

Foote received a master’s degree in motivational counseling and education from the University of Northern Colorado in 1980. Her work includes numerous publications and presentations. Most recently, Foote and assistant professor Larry Roberts presented "Growing Our Own: An Adult Learning Pathway for Rural and Frontier Alaska" at the First Nations Technical Institute in Ontario, Canada.

Foote said she is excited to be in the position. "I am committed to the whole notion of growing our own health professionals and look forward to working with our partners to build better, healthier communities."
