University of Alaska Fairbanks Assistant Professor Lee Haugen has been named director of the Northwest Campus in Nome. As director, she is responsible for academic and vocational planning and program development, overall budget management, facilities, personnel and student services at the campus, part of UAF’s College of Rural & Community Development.
Haugen has served as a member of UAF’s faculty for two decades, most recently as an assistant professor of education in language, literacy and culture. She attended the University of Arizona, where she received a master’s degree in education specializing in reading and a Ph.D. in language, reading and culture. In addition, she taught for two years in the village of Noorvik and for five years at Northwest Campus. Haugen started the new position Jan. 9.
"I’m at a point in my life where I’m ready for the next level,"? said Haugen. "The campus has been in flux for a long time and I’m willing to make a commitment to guide us toward a common vision."?
Jerri Nagaruk, chair of the Northwest Campus Advisory Council and a resident of Elim, is looking forward to Haugen’s tenure at the campus.
"We’ve had so many changes in leadership over the last five years,"? she said. "It’s heartening to know that Dr. Haugen is willing to commit her time to the campus and work with us to develop some long-term strategies."?
Haugen has the skills to help the campus move forward, added Bernice Joseph, CRCD executive dean, "I am very pleased that Dr. Haugen has decided to step up and serve as the director for Northwest Campus. She has given this serious consideration and has received positive feedback from the staff, faculty and leadership in the region."?
