The University of Alaska Fairbanks Office of Multicultural Affairs will host an Alaska Civil Rights Day celebration Thursday, Jan. 26 from 7-9 p.m. in the Wood Center Carol Brown Ballroom. The event will feature keynote speaker Eric Love, diversity director at Indiana University, and an introductory address by Edna MacLean, UAF associate professor of Inupiaq and 2005 Alaska Federation of Natives citizen of the year.

Love has a master’s degree in counseling and a bachelor’s degree in social sciences. He is currently a doctoral candidate in higher education administration at Indiana University. He also runs his own diversity consulting business. He is expected to discuss ways to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. through service and give examples from his own experiences. He also plans to do some interactive exercises and end with an inspirational message.

MacLean recently joined UAF’s faculty after serving as president of Ilisagvik College in Barrow for a decade. She has a master’s degree in education from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in education from Stanford University.

In addition to the speakers, the University Chorus and the UAF African dance group will perform. The event is free and open to the public.
