Wanted: Future leaders of Alaska’s seafood processing industry.

Career oriented seafood processing workers are invited to apply to a new program that offers Alaskans specialized training in leadership, seafood handling, safety and sanitation, marketing and logistics.

Called the Alaska Seafood Processing Industry Leadership Institute, the program aims to promote the professional development of promising future leaders in the seafood processing industry.

The institute is a partnership with the Alaska Department of Community and Economic Development’s Fisheries Revitalization Strategy, launched in 2003 by Gov. Frank Murkowski, and the Alaska Fisheries Business Assistance Project (FishBiz) of the Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program. The Fisheries Revitalization Strategy assists Alaska communities hard hit by low salmon prices. FishBiz provides resources and training opportunities to the state’s fishermen and seafood processors.

Participants will receive advanced training in seafood processing, marketing and logistics, and receive Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point HACCP certification. Individuals also will gain skills in plant and personnel management and leadership. The training will culminate in a trip to the International Boston Seafood Show and Iceland to view professional seafood processing operations and facilities.

Participants will be selected during an application process, which opened Feb. 3, 2006. The deadline for submitting applications is March 3, 2006.
