UAF Summer Sessions offers in-state tuition for all

With offerings from sociology to sea kayaking, mathematics to mushroom identification, Summer Sessions at the University of Alaska Fairbanks has courses for both the serious student and the recreational learner. And starting this year, it is even more affordable than ever.

For the first time in its history, UAF Summer Sessions is offering in-state tuition rates for everyone. That step makes Summer Sessions tuition the lowest summer tuition in the University of Alaska system and among the lowest offered by universities in the Northwest. And the credits students earn are usually transferable, since UAF is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and holds multiple other specialized accreditations.

"Why wouldn’t students want to come to Fairbanks at its most beautiful time?" said Michelle Bartlett, Summer Sessions director. "We have room in our classes. Classes are smaller. Instruction is more hands-on."

Students can take lower division undergraduate courses for $109 per credit hour, upper division courses for $123 per credit hour and graduate courses for $244 per credit hour.

In addition to offering a choice of more than 250 courses, including travel and weekend classes, Summer Sessions students who wish to live on campus can choose from an assortment of economical meal and housing options. Students who take six or more credits are also eligible for on-campus employment.

When students are not in class, they can participate in a wealth of outdoor and cultural activities on campus and in the surrounding community. Among the highlights are the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival, which draws artists, musicians, dancers and writers from across the United States, Fairbanks’ annual solstice celebration and thousands of acres of wilderness just a few miles out of town. UAF Summer Sessions will also host a live taping of Michael Feldman’s "Whad’Ya Know?" on Friday, July 7.

"Summer in Fairbanks is incredible," Bartlett said. "Our flower-filled campus is beautiful with the Alaska Range and Denali National Park just to the south. It is a perfect time to come and study under the midnight sun."

Summer Sessions runs from May 22 to Aug. 11 and includes two six-week and two three-week sessions, as well as special "weekend focus" classes. Registration opens Feb. 20 and is available online at www.uaf.edu/summer
