After a hiatus for construction on the University of Alaska Museum of the North’s new wing, Saturday Family Programs return to the museum this weekend. The first program of the season features ice sculpting under the guidance of artists Mimi and Mark Chapin and runs from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, February 25. The museum provides the ice, the tools and hot chocolate; participants bring warm clothing and an idea for their ice sculpture, which they get to take home at the end of the morning program.
"This is the seventh year we’ve offered the ice carving workshop and it’s always one of our most popular family programs" says museum director Aldona Jonaitis. "Working on your own ice sculpture certainly gives you a better appreciation for the ice art you see around town."
The ice carving program is open to participants aged 7 and older, though youth aged 7-14 must be accompanied by an adult. The program fee is $15 per team, plus a $24 materials fee, with a limit of two people per block of ice.
To register for the ice carving program, contact the museum education department at 474-6948. A full listing of the museum’s spring programs is available online at www.uaf.edu/museum.
