Excavate a fossil, meet a reindeer and launch a rocket at this year’s University of Alaska Fairbanks Science Potpourri, Saturday, April 8 from noon-5 p.m. at the Natural Sciences Facility on the UAF campus.
The annual event is organized by the UAF College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and allows kids of all ages to experience hair-raising physics, combustible chemistry and gripping geology. Interactive experiments, exhibits and demonstrations will be on display throughout the day.
New attractions this year include a booth that allows children to help clean and excavate a fish fossil partially embedded in sandstone, make-it-yourself film-canister rockets and a falconry workshop at 1 p.m. In addition, the event will feature returning favorites like synthesizing slime, making ice cream using liquid nitrogen, freezing flowers and cutting rocks. Visitors are encouraged to bring a favorite rock to the rock clinic. Participants can pour hot magma, peer at crystals through a microscope and cook with chemists. Intrepid scientists can take a closer look at the human brain, robots and the inside of a volcano.
All activities are free and open to the public. Free parking is available behind the Natural Sciences Facility.
