Alaska Film Archives completes national preservation grant

The Alaska Film Archives, part of the Rasmuson Library at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, recently completed work to provide access to video footage of the first public hearings that led to passage of the Alaska National Interest Land Conservation Act. The 1973 public hearings took place at dozens of locations throughout Alaska and revealed issues and concerns of rural and urban Alaskans about the future of the state’s undeveloped lands. The hearings were originally recorded on an early open-reel video format that is no longer in use, but are now available on DVD and VHS through funding from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission and the Rasmuson Foundation.

Associate professor selected as Fulbright Scholar grantee

The J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board has selected Karen Erikson, associate professor of political science at UAF, as a 2006 Fulbright scholar grantee to Norway. Fulbright grantees work to establish open communication and long-term cooperative relationships with their host country. They aim to enrich the educational, political, economic, social and cultural lives of countries around the world.

UAF awarded M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust grant

The M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust has awarded UAF a $14,000 grant that will enable Lawrence Duffy, professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UAF, to partner with Lathrop High School science teacher Jim Lokken to conduct research during the next two summers. The title of the research project is Climate Change, Environmental Mercury and Reindeer Productivity on the Seward Peninsula. The award includes funds to attend two national Partners in Science conferences, where Lokken will share the results of each summer’s research.

Three UAF undergrads to receive Golden Key Scholarship

UAF students Al Rottnek of Cahokia, Ill., Jennifer Haberin of Salcha and Elizabeth O’Brien of Oakland, Calif. have been named 2005 recipients of the Golden Key International Honour Society Undergraduate Scholarship. The scholarships are awarded to junior and senior society members, who are selected by the local chapter based on overall scholastic performance, honors and awards received, and leadership and community service.
