Shann Jones, an instructor of outdoor activities with the Tanana Valley Campus, was recently elected to the executive committee of the Council for Adventure and Outdoor Education/Recreation. Part of the American Association for Physical Activity and Recreation, the council promotes personal growth in the outdoors, and aims to develop programs for K-12 and university curricula that develop awareness of the environment, group dynamics and self development.

Through the University of Alaska Fairbanks Summer Sessions, Jones developed the first post-secondary sport fishing education program in 2001. Jones’ fly-fishing and fly-tying courses are popular and are offered regularly.

Jones will teach introductory fly fishing and fly tying over a weekend in June through UAF Summer Sessions and will also teach a semester-long course in the fall.
