The University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Engineering and Mines advisory council, alumni and faculty have selected Gov. Frank Murkowski to be the recipient of the College of Engineering and Mines 2006 Distinguished Service Award.

UAF Chancellor Steve Jones will present the award at the college’s annual banquet at 7 p.m., Friday, April 28, 2006, at the Westmark Fairbanks Hotel. Murkowski will be the keynote speaker for the banquet.

The college will also honor Helen Atkinson, the first female engineering graduate from the University of Alaska, with the Outstanding Alumna Award. In addition, Robert Carlson, professor emeritus, will be honored for his 40 years of service to the civil and environmental engineering department.

This is the first year that CEM alumni are sponsoring an awards banquet to recognize students, faculty, alumni and other professionals for their contributions to Alaska’s engineering industry. This annual awards banquet follows the long tradition initiated by the former School of Mineral Engineering.
