FAIRBANKS, Alaska--Get an up-close look at caribou, reindeer and muskoxen calves and their mothers during the third-annual Birthday Party for the Babies Saturday, May 20 at the Robert G. White Large Animal Research Station.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Institute of Arctic Biology invites the public to celebrate their newest spring residents and get a sneak peak at the critters before the Large Animal Research Station’s official season opening.

The Birthday Party for the Babies will take place from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the station on Yankovich Road. Parking at LARS is limited. Two free shuttle buses from UAF’s Taku parking lot off Farmers Loop will run from 9:45 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

The birthday party will celebrate LARS’ youngest residents and showcase youth opportunities in our community. Representatives from Farthest North Girl Scout Council, Camp Habitat, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Midnight Sun Boy Scout Council and other nonprofit organizations offering summer programs for kids will have information at the party and will be providing volunteer assistance during the event.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Kids’ Fish & Game Fun Day will be held at Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. the same day. LARS and ADF&G encourage all Fairbanksans to come out for a free day of Alaska fun.

UAF’s Tanana Valley Campus Culinary Arts Department will contribute cakes, the Cooperative Extension Service and School of Education will help with activity tables, and the Music Department will provide musical accompaniment to the party. Gene’s Chrysler, KTVF Channel 11, Horizon Services, MAC Federal Credit Union, Hot Licks Ice Cream, Craig Taylor Equipment and other local businesses contributed financial and in-kind support.
