Fairbanks, Alaska--The University of Alaska Press is pleased to announce the appointment of Robert Mandel as its new director. Mandel brings a wealth of publishing experience to the press. After receiving his Ph.D. in modern European history, Mandel taught at several Canadian universities before he began his publishing career at Praeger Publishers.

Mandel has since worked as senior acquisitions editor at SUNY Press, as assistant director at Indiana University Press, and as director at Wayne State University Press, Syracuse University Press and, most recently, at the University of Wisconsin Press.

Mandel’s vision for University of Alaska Press, which has published award-winning books about Alaska and the circumpolar north for more than three decades, involves expanding the publishing program through the development of new series and acquisitions, increasing the visibility of the press nationally and internationally, and making the University of Alaska Press the publisher of choice in the subjects of geography, geology, history, memoir, Native American studies, and natural history.
