Retired brigadier general named vice chancellor

University of Alaska Fairbanks Chancellor Steve Jones has named Rosanne "Ro"? Bailey as UAF’s new vice chancellor for administrative services.

Bailey, a retired Air Force brigadier general, will oversee multiple administrative offices at UAF, including budget, business operations, purchasing, personnel, risk management, environmental health and safety, the fire and police departments, and facilities services, Jones said. "Ro is an outstanding addition to the UAF community."?

Bailey’s military career spanned nearly three decades and included command positions at multiple duty stations. From 1996 to 1998 she served as commander of the 354th Logistics Group at Eielson Air Force Base. In 2002, Bailey was promoted to brigadier general. Her last position was commander of the Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center in Colorado.

Bailey holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial management from Purdue University and a master’s degree in engineering management from the Air Force Institute of Technology.

Bailey said working in higher education is appealing to her for a couple of reasons. Her position at UAF closely resembles her work as air base wing commander, one of her favorite assignments during her Air Force career. In addition, Bailey said it is important to her to work in an organization that makes a difference in the lives of the people it serves.

"In the military, you are serving the nation,"? she said. "When you move into the academic world, you are serving the future."?

Bailey was among four finalists for the position, which was left vacant by the resignation of Mark Neumayr, who stepped down late last year to accept a job as university counsel at Northern Arizona University. Bailey started the position Aug. 28.
