According to information from local telephone service providers, the current telephone and network outage is a result of two severed fiberoptic lines. Last week, flooding near Valdez severed one of the lines. Traffic for that line was re-routed through another line, which was also recently severed. The result is that telephone and Internet service for interior Alaska is limited at best.
The campus community should be able to communicate with others on campus via telephone and fax. E-mail to UAF addresses may be sporadic. E-mail coming from off-campus addresses will not be delivered until service is restored. E-mail outgoing to off-campus addresses will be held in the UAF servers until service is restored and then will be sent.
Internet access is also affected. Most on-campus Web sites should be available, but those outside UAF’s servers will not be accessible.
Information from local telephone providers indicates that long-distance and cellular telephone service is down and that local phone service may also sporadic at times. Crews are working on repairs, but we do not have information as to when full service will be restored.
