UAF’s Tanana Valley Campus, in partnership with the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, will be offering after-school career exploration classes for high school students in the energy and construction fields. Classes will include construction trades, diesel technology/welding and applied mining/operating engineers. A fourth class will be offered solely for students at Fairbanks Youth Facility.
The purpose of the Interior Alaska Career Academy is to greatly expand opportunities for high school students to learn about high-growth, high-demand job fields leading to good careers. This partnership also involves the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development which is investing $70,000 to pilot the project in 2006-07. Other partners include Alaska Works Partnership, Carpenters Union Local 1243, Laborer’s Union Local 959, Operating Engineers Union Local 302, Delta Mine Training Center and Usibelli Coal Mine.
Each academy session will involve 42 hours of instruction. The construction trades academy will be offered Nov. 10-Dec. 16. The diesel technology/welding academy wil run Jan. 2-8 and the applied mining/operating engineers academy will run March 12-17. Each academy will accept 15 students from high schools in the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District. The location of each academy session will vary.
Students will earn one UAF/TVC credit for each session successfully completed. Upon successful completion of two sessions, they will earn .5 high school elective credits. The student cost per session is $150. Scholarships may be available.
