Museum, faculty members to receive governor’s awards

The University of Alaska Museum of the North, UAF history professor Terrence Cole and UAF adjunct instructor Dermot Cole are among a dozen recipients of this year’s Governor’s Awards for the Arts and Humanities.

Gov. Frank Murkowski and First Lady Nancy Murkowski are slated to present the awards at a dinner Friday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Anchorage Marriott Hotel.

The museum is set to receive the Arts Organization Award for its success in undergoing an extensive expansion while continuing its research, outreach and education mission. Museum director Aldona Jonaitis will attend the dinner and accept the award.

Terrence and Dermot Cole, who are identical twin brothers, will receive Distinguished Service to the Humanities awards.

Terrence Cole is a veteran UAF history professor and director of UAF’s Office of Public History. In addition, he is the author of multiple books on Alaska history and is recognized as a specialist on the Alaska gold rush.

Dermot Cole is a longtime columnist for the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner who has written about Alaska and Alaska history for three decades. His writings include several books on Alaska and Fairbanks history. He is also an adjunct history instructor at UAF.
