Author to speak on "apartheid education in America"?

Author and activist Jonathan Kozol, best known for his books on public education in the United States, will give a free public lecture Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006 at 7 p.m. in the Davis Concert Hall at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The lecture will also be available via webcast at www.uaf.edu/news/webcasts/.

Kozol will discuss the findings of his most recent book, "Shame of the Nation: The Restoration of Apartheid Education in America," in which he documents the continuing and often worsening segregation in public schools in the United States. The lecture is part of the Bartlett Lecture Series.

Kozol is a nonfiction writer, educator and activist who graduated summa cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in English literature and was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship. In 1967, he was fired for teaching a Langston Hughes poem, as described in book "Death at an Early Age,"? and then became deeply involved in the civil rights movement. His other best-selling books include "Savage Inequalities: Children In America’s Schools" and "Amazing Grace: The Lives of Children and the Conscience of a Nation."
