Second-half Comeback Falls Short For Rhode Island

Troy University used a three-point shooting outburst in the first half to take an 84-78 win in game two of the BP Top of the World Classic Thursday night at the Carlson Center. The Trojans hit nine three-pointers in the first half to help build a 14-point halftime lead and then held on despite a late Rams rally.

Troy trailed by one when freshman guard Brandon Hazzard hit a three-pointer to make it 21-19 at the 11:31 mark of the first half. The Trojans would never trail again and built leads as big as 18 over the Rams. Troy was outrebounded by the Rams 42-27 but the Trojans hit 53 percent on threes and forced 20 turnovers to secure the win.

The Trojan trey barrage was led by four threes each from senior center Cedric Jackson (20 points) and junior guard O’Darien Bassett (18 points). Senior forward Richard Chaney, a transfer from Utah, led Troy with 23 points and junior guard Jerome Odem chipped in 11 points and six assists.

Rhode Island was led by sophomore forward Kahiem Seawright had 17 points and nine boards and sophomore guard Jimmy Baron also scored 17 including five three-pointers. Senior forward Will Daniels added 16 points in the losing effort.
