Jaycee Carroll scored a game-high 27 points and Utah State never trailed in a 77-71 victory over Centenary in game three of the BP Top of the World Classic on Friday night at the Carlson Center. The Aggies jumped to an early double-digit lead, at one point leading by as many as 24 points late in the half, and then survived a second-half Centenary surge to advance.

Utah State scored the games first seven points and extended the lead to 21-7 after Mikel Watson’s three with 13:49 left. The Aggies hit 7-of-13 threes in the half and led 46-22 with 1:24 left after Watson’s free throw. Utah State turned 12 Gents’ turnovers into 22 points, while only coughing the ball up six times themselves.

The Gents picked up the slack in the second half, outscoring the Aggies by 14, but fell short in the comeback bid. Centenary trimmed the lead to six points four times but Utah State had an answer each time.

Carroll led three double figure scorers for the Aggies. Durrall Peterson had 11 points including three treys and Watson chipped in 10. Chase Adams led four Gents in double figures with 17 points.

Utah State advances to face the winner of the Drake/Southeast Missouri game tomorrow (Nov. 18) at 8:00 p.m. AST. Centenary drops to loser bracket against the Drake/Southeast Missouri at 2:30 p.m. AST at the Carlson Center.
