UAF faculty recognized for scholarly activities

The University of Alaska Fairbanks recently ranked fifth among small research institutions in a new national study that aims to measure the scholarly activities of universities and their faculty members.

The study by the for-profit company Academic Analytics examined the "scholarly production"? of 354 doctoral-degree-granting institutions across the United States. Its analysis used metrics such as faculty publications, citations, and financial and honorary awards. The achievements are analyzed by academic disciplines and are compared to national standards.

Using those criteria, UAF ranked fifth among institutions that offer up to 14 doctoral degrees. Other institutions in the top five include San Diego State University, Bryn Mawr College, Wright State University and University of Massachusetts Boston, which tied with UAF for the No. 5 rank. UAF was also ranked among the top 10 universities in the country in scholarly production in the fields of atmospheric science and environmental sciences.

UAF has more than a dozen research centers and institutes, many of which focus on the Arctic and ranks 63rd out of 200 universities in the amount of research money awarded from the National Science Foundation. UAF’s research funding has more than doubled in the last decade, from $56.4 million in 1997 to $121 million in 2006.

UAF is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
