The University of Alaska Fairbanks will join higher education institutions across the state and nation during February to highlight the availability of financial aid for students who want to pursue a college education.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has designated February as Financial Aid Awareness Month as a way to encourage students and parents to learn more about the process of applying for financial aid.

February is an important month for students seeking financial aid. The deadline to apply for UAF privately funded scholarships and UA Foundation scholarships is Feb. 15. In order to secure the best financial aid package, students should make sure they complete the federal Free Application for Federal Student Aid, known as the FAFSA, by Feb. 28.

The UAF financial aid office is hosting multiple workshops and events throughout the month to help students and their families complete the paperwork necessary to take full advantage of the financial aid available.

On Sunday, Feb. 11, UAF will participate in College Goal Sunday, a nationwide program designed to help families fill out financial aid paperwork. The UAF event will be held from 2-4 p.m. at three locations in Alaska: Lathrop High School, the UAF Interior-Aleutians Campus Tok Center and the Interior-Aleutians Campus Yukon Flats Center in Fort Yukon.

In addition, UAF is planning "How to complete the FAFSA"? workshops throughout the month of February at locations throughout the state. Visit www.uaf.edu/finaid/workshops/ for a full schedule of workshops.

Both College Goal Sunday and the FAFSA workshops are free and open to anyone who is planning to seek postsecondary education during the 2007-2008 academic year. Students and parents should bring copies of their most recent income tax returns.
