Photojournalist to speak on experiences covering Sept. 11

Award-winning photographer and journalism professor David Handschuh will be in Fairbanks next week as part of the Snedden Lecture Series, hosted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Journalism.

Handschuh will give a public presentation, "Out of the Fire and Into the Frying Pan: a News Photographer’s Journey from 9/11 to the Kitchen,"? Thursday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Noel Wien Library. Handschuh will spend the week meeting with journalism classes and students and is also scheduled to meet with local journalists during his visit to Fairbanks.

Handschuh has been a staff photographer at the New York Daily News for more than 18 years and has been an adjunct photojournalism professor at New York University since 1995.

He suffered serious injuries while covering the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. During his recovery, he implemented several programs to document and address long-term physical and mental health issues for journalists who were working at Ground Zero. His work earned him recognition as a "Fellow of the Society,"? one of the highest honors bestowed by Sigma Delta Chi, the national Society of Professional Journalists. Handschuh is also co-author of the "National Media Guide for Emergency and Disaster Incidents."? He continues to work with media and emergency personnel to foster better relations between the two.

The UAF journalism department hosts visiting journalists as part of the Snedden Endowed Chair of Journalism. Helen Snedden made the endowment in honor of her late husband and former Fairbanks Daily News-Miner publisher C.W. Snedden.
