Fairbanks, Alaska--The Rural Alaska Honors Institute is now accepting registration for its 2007 session.

RAHI, a six-week college preparatory program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, is open to high school juniors and seniors in rural Alaska who have a grade point average of at least 3.0. The program, which runs May 29-July 12, is designed to help students succeed in college by sharpening academic and coping skills. RAHI covers travel, tuition, room, board, books and supplies for selected students. The application deadline is March 30, 2007.

RAHI students experience college life by living on the UAF campus in a residence hall. They earn college credit in courses such as writing for college, study skills, pre-calculus, engineering, business management, biochemistry, geoscience, rural development, web site design, swimming and Alaska Native dance.

"The RAHI community experience is an important step for students from rural Alaska,"? said Denise Wartes, RAHI program coordinator. "In just six weeks, students build a strong support system that helps them succeed in college and beyond."?

The program, founded in 1983 at the request of the Alaska Federation of Natives, helps build a lifelong community of scholars and supportive friendships. Many RAHI alumni are now in Alaska’s professional workforce. Over the years, RAHI alumni have earned 202 baccalaureate degrees, 93 associate degrees, 37 certificates, 28 master’s degrees, five law degrees and one medical degree.

Applications may be downloaded at www.uaf.edu/rahi/ or obtained from school counselors, local tribal entities or RAHI at (800) 478-6886 or fyrahi@uaf.edu. The program is part of UAF’s College of Rural and Community Development. RAHI courses are funded through UAF, Alyeska Pipeline Service Co., Wells Fargo, National Science Foundation, Experimental Program to Stimulate Research and the National Institutes of Health.
