Tips available for students applying to medical school
Students interested in applying to and financing for medical school will have an opportunity to participate in the 2007 Alaska PreMed Summit Saturday, March 31 from 8-5 p.m. in room 109 of the Butrovich Building at UAF. The event is geared toward high school and undergraduate students, counselors, advisers and parents. The summit will take place at the Rasmuson Hall at the University of Alaska Anchorage, but is offered at UAF via videoconferencing. Students will have an opportunity to learn how to be a more competitive applicant to medical school and will participate in mock interviews. Larry Duffy, with UAF’s Special Neuroscience Research Program will lead the session. The event is sponsored by WWAMI, a collaborative medical school established by the University of Washington and the states of Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. Opera Workshop performs in celebration of Mozart’s 250th birthday
The University of Alaska Fairbanks Opera Workshop will present its spring semester production of Mozart’s "The Impresario,"? along with other Mozart works. "The Impresario-A Mozart Gala"? will take place Saturday, March 24 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 25 at 4 p.m. in the Charles W. Davis Concert Hall. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students, seniors and the military. The Fairbanks Choral Arts Orchestra will join the company. "The Impresario"? pokes fun at stereotypes of singers, opera and the theater itself. It is a fast-moving comedy that is appropriate for all ages. The performance is in celebration of the 250th birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Students perform well in national singing competition
Four students from the UAF music department received awards when they competed in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Classical Competition 2007 earlier this month in Anchorage. Janene Mickel, who studies with Marvilla Davis, placed first in her division. Walter Fourie, who studies with associate professor John Hopkins, placed first in his division and Vanessa Cox and Gwendolyn Brazier, who study with assistant professor Jaunelle Celaire, placed first and second, respectively, in their division.
UAF staffer takes honors in writing competition
Leah Aronow-Brown, an administrative assistant in the UAF English department, received first prize in the Fairbanks Arts Association’s 2007 Alaska Statewide Poetry Contest with her poem "Listening to the Poet Laureate Speak in Gaelic."? Peggy Shumaker, UAF professor emerita, served as a judge for the competition. Aronow-Brown also recently won third prize in the Helen Keller International Writing Competition for her story "Jillian’s Music."? She earned a bachelor’s degree from Harvard in 1972 and a master’s degree in creative writing from UAF in 1983.
SIFE team members participate in regional competition
A UAF Students In Free Enterprise team will present three community outreach projects at the SIFE regional competition in Seattle April 5. The first project is a financial literacy project involving local K-12 and university students. The second project is the formation of Students Who Enjoy Economic Thinking, known as SWEET, a student club that aims establish a variety of community outreach programs to teach free enterprise. Development of a Facebook website for the SWEET club is the third project.
