Automated parking kiosks installed this month at the University of Alaska Fairbanks will allow visitors to conveniently purchase short-term parking permits to park on the Fairbanks campus.

Short-term metered parking is also available during the workday, but the automated system gives visitors the option to pay for temporary parking without making an extra trip to the parking office. Beginning April 2, visitors to campus will need to purchase permits to park in campus parking lots during regular business hours, including in the Nenana and Taku parking lots as well as at University Park. Campus visitors can still park for free on weekends and after 5 p.m. on weekdays.

"We also have a number of part-time students taking one or two classes who may find it easier to pay as they go," said Martin Klein, associate director of parking services. "Staff and faculty who choose to carpool or park infrequently will have the option to purchase daily and weekly permits as they need them, rather than keeping a stack of day passes in their car."

Permits are available for 50 cents an hour, $3 a day or multiple days up to one week. The permits allow access to all regular decal lots and head bolt plug-ins. They are not required for metered parking, but meters must be paid when parking in those spaces.

Kiosks accept cash, coins and credit cards at the following locations:
* University Park
* Nenana across from the Student Recreation Center
* Taku parking lot off of Farmers Loop
* Thompson Drive at the pull out

Regular decal lot locations are shown on the UAF campus map online at www.uaf.edu/campusmap/. Gold reserved lots are excluded during the workday, but are open for visitors after 5 p.m. and on weekends. For more information call 474-PARK. Shuttle bus schedules are available at www.uaf.edu/fs/shuttlebus.html or by calling 474-RIDE for information about special transportation needs.
