TVC incentive aims to help students succeed

For the second year in a row, UAF’s Tanana Valley Campus is offering a one-credit TVC tuition waiver for English, math or study skills courses.

TVC’s student success program is geared toward unique concerns of first-time students, adults and returning students. First, students meet with an academic advisor to select classes and discuss financial aid. After that, students sign up for a short refresher course in math and English on Tuesday, Sept. 4 or Wednesday, Sept. 5. In following these simple steps, they are eligible for one credit of free TVC tuition.

"We want all students to know that UAF’s Tanana Valley Campus is a welcoming academic home, even if you’re not sure of a major or are wanting to make a fresh start" says Rick Caulfield, TVC Director. "We encourage students to stop by Tanana Valley Campus Center, talk with an advisor, and earn free credit."

TVC is holding a informational student open house and orientation on Tuesday, Sept. 4, from 4-7 p.m. at TVC’s campus center. All are welcome and there will be free food and prizes.

Students can also take free workshops through the first week in October on topics such as math anxiety, time management, test and note taking and improving writing skills. The free workshops are open to any student. Following is a schedule:

Tuesday, Sept. 25 - Stress and Time Management
Wednesday, Sept. 26 - Learning to use UAF e-mail and Blackboard
Thursday, Sept. 27 - How to Take Good Notes
Tuesday, Oct. 2 - Test-taking Strategies - How to Ace your Tests!
Wednesday, Oct. 3 - How to Improve your Writing Skills
Thursday, Oct. 4 - Overcoming Math Anxiety

Students who complete the simple steps for student success can use their tuition waiver for any TVC course in English, math or study-skills course.
