Kari Pile works at a housing site on Fort Wainwright as an intern for Watterson Construction while working toward an associate degree in construction management from TVC. The internship was arranged through UAF’s Career Services program.

5 easy steps to career exploration:

  1. Read "Mapping Your Career Path" on page 9 of the Career Services Guide

  2. Schedule an appointment with a career counselor.

  3. Explore "What can I do with this major?" tool online.

  4. Attend job fairs to learn about possible careers.

  5. Gain experience by participating in an internship or job shadow.

In the coming weeks, University of Alaska Fairbanks students will pack the hallway in front of the financial aid office, waiting to check the status of their loans and scholarships.

Many will be unaware that they are standing only feet away from another financial resource--the UAF Career Services department.

The free services offered there can help students find jobs and internships while they attend school and develop a plan to land the ideal post-graduation career.

For students who are unsure of their vocational aspirations, Career Services counselors will first help them define their interests and match those interests with a specific major or profession. Counselors can also help students improve their job-search techniques, sharpen their interviewing skills, design and prepare winning resumes and establish professional connections.

Career Services also serves as a jobs clearinghouse, connecting students to on-campus jobs, as well as local, national and international employers. The department offers a variety of events throughout the year, including job fairs, career expos and workshops. The first event of the year is a job fair in the Wood Center Sept. 12-13, featuring UAF departments seeking students for on-campus positions.

Students can schedule an appointment with a Career Services counselor by calling 474-7596 or visiting Room 110 of the Eielson Building. Students can also access online job databases, internship listings, events calendars and other career-planning resources at www.uaf.edu/career/.
