UAF awarded National Science Foundation grants
UAF received a $498,571 grant from the National Science Foundation to fund a project to measure recent ice volume change and model future changes in of all arctic glaciers in the United States. The project is under the direction of Matt Nolan of the Institute of Northern Engineering. UAF also received a $167,227 grant for a collaborative research project on downscaling global climate projections to the ecosystems of the Bering Sea, under the direction of Katherine Hedstrom of the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center.

Doctoral student awarded NSF grant
Alison Meadow, a doctoral student in the anthropology department, was recently awarded a grant of more than $12,000 by the National Science Foundation to support her dissertation research on food system localization and community sustainability. Anthropology professor Craig Gerlach is her dissertation advisor. His recent work focuses on nutritional ecology, community health and the restoration of traditional food systems in Interior northern Alaska.

Theatre UAF to present ’No Exit’
Theatre UAF will present "No Exit," the story of three people trapped in a small room in hell, Sept. 28-Oct. 6 in the Salisbury Theatre. The characters must search for the reason they have been put together in an attempt at redemption. Jean-Paul Sartre, a 20th-century French philosopher who declined the 1964 Nobel Prize in Literature, penned the play in 1944. Staged in the Salisbury Theatre, "No Exit" will be performed concurrently with an art installation movement piece featuring the seven deadly sins in the UAF Lab Theatre. Directed by senior theater student Ben Coffroth for his directorial thesis project, "No Exit" opens Sept. 28 and runs through Oct. 6 with Friday and Saturday performances at 8:15 p.m., and a matinee performance at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7.

Study Abroad Fair fast approaching
The University of Alaska Fairbanks Study Abroad Fair will take place Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 3 - 4 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Wood Center. The fair is put on by the Office of International Programs, which offers opportunities for UAF students and faculty to travel to more than 100 destinations through international student exchange, study abroad and faculty abroad programs. International exchange students, study abroad representatives, UAF students who have been abroad and international students currently studying at UAF will all be at the fair. Athletes to become big brothers, big sisters
On Sunday, Sept. 16, the Alaska Nanooks, in conjunction with the Fairbanks chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters and the United Way, will host "Bigs for a Day" on campus from 3-5 p.m. More than 20 student athletes, representing a variety of UAF’s athletic programs, will become a volunteer big brother or big sister for the afternoon, participating in activities such as volleyball, basketball, ice-skating and crafts with local BBBS kids. The event will conclude with a barbeque, with food and drinks donated by Fred Meyer, at 5:15 p.m.
