Volcanoes have had profound impacts on the environment since the Earth was young. They have also been a source of fascination and fear for humankind. In this month’s Science Café, scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m., volcanologist Jon Dehn of the Alaska Volcano Observatory will explore how volcanoes affect the environment, globally, regionally and locally. Dehn will also discuss how volcanoes have affected the development of human culture and how we manage the effects of volcanoes today.
The IPY Science Café is brought to you by the University of Alaska IPY Young Researchers’ Network. The network-powered by young scientists from UA campuses across the state-aims to take science off campus through outreach to the general public and students of Alaska. Science Café events are interactive lectures that will take part throughout IPY to give the public a chance to have one-on-one conversations with polar scientists or visiting specialists and to learn about the science that’s happening around the world.
Wednesday’s event will take place at the Alaska Coffee Roasting Company in Fairbanks. For more information regarding the location visit www.uaf.edu/ipy.
