The Doug Schamel Memorial Fund is now accepting proposals for grants to promote and support science education and enthusiasm for science among children and teenagers.

The fund, established through the University of Alaska Fairbanks, will award grants of up to $500 per proposal. Proposals are encouraged from any member of the Fairbanks community interested in inspiring and educating K-12 age children in the sciences, including teachers, professional and amateur scientists, home-school mentors and others. Funding may be used for equipment and supplies, field trips, guest scientists in the classrooms and anything that directly affects students. The deadline for applications is Oct. 15, 2007.

Schamel was a UAF alumnus and longtime professor who was active in community science outreach. He worked to form partnerships with local schools and helped establish and organize projects and programs including the Alaska Statewide High School Science Symposium, the UAF Alaska Summer Research Academy, the "Science Imaginarium" and the District Science Fair. His family established the memorial fund with donations received in his memory after his death in March 2005.

Additional information and grant parameters are available online at the Alaska Science Education Outreach Network. To apply, please submit a letter of two pages or less describing your proposal and how it will foster an enthusiasm for science. Include a brief, but clear, budget and your name, address, phone number, email address and affiliation, if applicable. Maximum funding is $500; several grants may be awarded depending on availability of funds.

Send proposals to: Schamel Memorial Fund, c/o UAF Advancement Services, 4001 Geist Road, Suite 6, P.O. Box 757530, Fairbanks, AK 99775
