The Alaska women made the most of their stay at the Glacier Classic in Anchorage, completing a weekend sweep with a 76-45 win over Chaminade. The Nanooks shot a scorching 60.7 percent (17-28) in the first half in effectively ending the contest by the break, as they headed to the locker rooms with a 21-point advantage.
After building a big lead early, coach Lynne Andrew took the opportunity to demonstrate her team’s depth, using every one of the 15 players on the roster. Megan Thigpen, playing just her third career game, took full advantage of the opportunity, scoring nine points and grabbing five boards in just 11 minutes on the floor. Henderson State transfer Nada Erhardt was also impressive, pulling down a game-high eight rebounds.
Player of the Game Kari Reabold led all Alaska scorers with 10 points, recording five in each half. The senior co-captain was well on her way to a double-double as well, snagging seven rebounds before being rested for most of the second half.
From there, the Nanook defense took over, limiting the Silverswords to just 7-31 shooting (22 percent) for just 19 points in the final 20 minutes. Chamindae did get a game-high 14 points from guard Felicia Alves, but it wasn’t enough to threaten Alaska’s advantage.
After wrapping up their successful, two-win trip south, the Nanooks (3-1) now return to Fairbanks to take on University of Texas of the Permian Basin this Thursday at the Patty Center. Tip-off in that match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
