Take a break from your holiday hustle by grabbing your coats, boots and guests and heading to the Institute of Arctic Biology Large Animal Research Station for the Arctic Affair Open House on Wednesday, Dec. 26, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tour the heart of LARS, where scientists and researchers who work with muskoxen, reindeer and caribou will talk about research projects, how the animals adapt to life in the Arctic and the history of LARS. You may also take a self-guided tour of the research barns and new meeting house. Scientists, researchers and LARS’ resident qivuit expert will be on hand to answer questions and there will be educational displays about the animals and research projects.

The Arctic Affair Open House is a great way to learn about Alaska’s iconic arctic ungulates, work off some of those holiday treats and have a good time. Enjoy complimentary hot cocoa, cider and door prizes after your LARS exploration.

LARS, founded in 1979 with a grant from the National Science Foundation, provides facilities and expertise in maintaining animal colonies, provides educational opportunities and community outreach on high-latitude biology and makes this knowledge available for resource managers and educators. As part of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, researchers, scientists, and students conduct research and teach and take classes at LARS.

Location/parking
LARS is located at 2220 Yankovich Road. LARS’ parking lot is directly off Yankovich Road. Please park close together and diagonally so the number of spaces and accessibility is maximized. Follow the marked path for a short walk from the parking lot to the Meeting House where the self-guided and scientist-led tours begin.
