Climate change teach-in begins with webcast

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Sustainable Campus Task Force is hosting a teach-in on climate change. The event, coinciding with the Focus the Nation national teach-in, begins Wednesday, Jan. 30 with an interactive webcast, "The "2% Solution" from 4-6 p.m. in the Wood Center Carol Brown Ballroom.

Day two begins at noon with a talk from Larry Hinzman, director of UAF’s International Arctic Research Center, "Making Sense of Climate Change Information Overload." It will end with a panel of climate change experts: Hinzman; Terry Chapin, professor of biology and wildlife; Dave Klein, professor emeritus of biology and wildlife; and Rich Seifert, professor of engineering and Cooperative Extension Service energy specialist.

All Jan. 31 events will take place in the Butrovich Building Room 109. Parking is available in the Nenana parking lot across from the Student Recreation Center. Campus shuttles run frequently to the Butrovich Building. The Jan. 31 schedule follows:

Noon "Making Sense of Climate Change Information Overload," presented by Hinzman, IARC director
12:45 p.m. Video presentation: Food for thought and action
1 p.m. Break
1:45 p.m. "Climate change relating to Alaska forest fires and smoke," presented by Glenn Juday, professor of forest ecology
2:30 p.m. "Solutions to Climate Change through Sustainability," presentation by Rich Seifert, CES
3:15 p.m. Panel discussion: Ask the climate-change experts
4:45 p.m. Closing remarks
