University to host cyberinfrastructure event

The University of Alaska Fairbanks’ first Cyberinfrastructure Day events will take place 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 22 in the Wood Center on the Fairbanks campus. All events are free and open to the public.

"Cyberinfrastructure is about three things: access, integration and collaboration," said Steve Smith, chief information technology officer for UAF and the University of Alaska statewide administration. "It includes hardware and software, the networks to connect them and the people to work with all these tools without regard to location."

The event will highlight the research, education and outreach activities at UAF that rely on cyberinfrastructure. It will also focus on the challenges and opportunities that go along with this next generation of technology and how it is used at UAF. Cyberinfrastructure Day events will include a presentation by Michael Comberiate of NASA, along with his robot, as well as a session with Tim Lorang from the Research Channel. Smith will give a remote presentation via the Internet and a number of UAF scientists and researchers who rely on cyberinfrastructure are also slated to speak.

Vendors such as Chariot Group, Samsung, Dell, Government Computer Sales, Pacnor and Turning Point will have booths at the Wood Center multilevel lounge.
