Local elementary students explore college options

A group of local fourth through sixth-grade students will get their first taste of college Friday, April 25, from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. during the fifth annual I’m Going to College event at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The event aims to introduce children from diverse backgrounds to preparation and financial aid programs that can help them attend college.

In recent weeks, approximately 400 students from Anne Wien, Denali, Hunter, Ladd, Anderson and Tri-Valley elementary schools have studied career choices, explored college options and learned about financial aid in preparation for their trip to UAF.

While on campus, the students will attend two 45-minute class sessions, have lunch at the Lola Tilly Commons and take a tour of the university. Class topics will include biology, engineering, French, fire science, music and theatre.

"I’ve watched how the young students interact with the professors during the class sessions and, by the end of the campus visit, many students can be heard saying that they can’t wait to go to college," said Jackie Alleyne-McCants, event coordinator and associate director of financial aid. "This event educates children about the benefits of a college degree and builds an understanding of the choices available for their education and financial aid."

This year’s event is sponsored by the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education, Northwest Education Loan Association and UAF Student and Enrollment Services.
