Large Animal Research Station to host Summer Soiree open house

FAIRBANKS, Alaska--Get a close-up look at caribou, reindeer and muskoxen calves and their mothers at the Robert G. White Large Animal Research Station’s annual Summer Soiree open house Saturday, May 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is hosted by the Institute of Arctic Biology at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

IAB invites the public to get a sneak peek and celebrate LARS’ newest spring residents before the station officially opens for the summer.

Faculty and students from the Institute of Arctic Biology will host interactive and educational displays and share their research on Alaska’s iconic animals. LARS’ interpretive guides and research staff will also be on hand to share the history of LARS.

LARS is located at 2220 Yankovich Road between Miller Hill and Ballaine roads. Parking at LARS is limited. Two free shuttles will run between UAF’s Taku parking lot and LARS beginning at 10:45 a.m. The last shuttle will leave LARS for the Taku lot at 3:15 p.m.

LARS is operated by the Institute of Arctic Biology at the University of Alaska Fairbanks to serve excellence in research and education in high-latitude biology by providing facilities and expertise in maintaining colonies of Arctic ungulates, coordinating educational opportunities and conducting community outreach. LARS was founded in 1979 with a grant from the National Science Foundation, Office of Polar Programs. UAF scientists, researchers and students and visiting scholars rely on LARS for their arctic animal studies.
