Alaska Summer Research Academy begins Monday

Instructors and staff are revving up for the Alaska Summer Research Academy’s kickoff July 14 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The academy will draw 127 students from Alaska, the United States and Australia for two weeks of hands-on science instruction.

The eighth annual academy is sponsored by the UAF College of Natural Science and Mathematics and gives students a preview of college life and the chance to immerse themselves in a variety of professional fields, from biomedicine/health science to marine biology to computer programming."¨"¨

The academy is open to middle and high school students, who receive one college credit when they complete one of the 15 academic modules offered at this year’s academy. Among the offerings is a new module, "¨"¨Glacier Dynamics and Biologic Succession, which allows student to travel to Glacier Bay to learn about climate change and the succession of ocean and forest. Other popular courses include robotics and forensics, where students work to solve a crime scene using "CSI"-style detection. "¨

The academy runs through July 25.
