The University of Alaska Museum of the North and Fairbanks Arts Association are joining forces to present an exhibit of contemporary art from the museum’s collections. "Northern Disclosure" opens Friday, Aug. 1 in the Fairbanks Arts Association Bear Gallery and runs through Sunday, Aug. 31.

The exhibit showcases more than 50 works of fine art acquired by the museum since the new wing opened in 2005. Featured artists include Tanya Clayton, Mark Fejes, Robert Fox, Nicholas Galanin, Carol Gelvin-Reymiller, Sandy Gillespie, Anna Ramsburgh and Kate Wool. Many of the works in the exhibit were first shown in local galleries.

"This exhibit highlights work being done by Alaska’s contemporary artists and represents the supportive roles that the museum and galleries play for each other and for the artists," says museum fine arts collection manager Scott Nacke.

The Fairbanks Arts Association Bear Gallery is located on the third floor of the Alaska Centennial Center for the Arts at Pioneer Park. The gallery is open from noon to 8 p.m. daily. Visitor information for the Bear Gallery is available at 456-6485 or online at www.fairbanksarts.org. The Fairbanks Arts Association will host a free opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 1.

The contemporary works displayed in "Northern Disclosure" represent a small portion of the museum’s fine art collection. Visitors can see more of the collection in the museum’s Rose Berry Alaska Art Gallery and Alaska Classics Gallery, which present the full spectrum of Alaska art. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily in summer. Information on the museum’s programs and exhibits is available at 907-474-7505 and online at www.uaf.edu/museum.
