Museum design wins national architecture award

The University of Alaska Museum of the North continues to garner national and international acclaim for its architectural design. Last month, the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, together with The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and Metropolitan Arts Press Ltd., selected the museum as one of the recipients of the 2008 American Architecture Awards.

For more than 10 years, the American Architecture Awards have honored and celebrated the most outstanding new accomplishments for architecture designed and built in the United States. The awards identify new cutting-edge design direction, urban philosophy, design approach, style and intellectual substance in American architecture today. This year, the Chicago Athenaeum received hundreds of submissions. From that pool, an international jury selected 66 projects to honor. This is the third major architecture award for the museum since its opening in 2005. The American Institute of Architects, Minnesota Chapter and the Society for College and University Planning have also honored the museum’s architectural design.
