Alaskans all over the state are looking for local options for their food, and more small farmers are considering using the Community Shared Agriculture model as a means of lessening the economic risk of farming. The UAF School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences is hosting a CSA roundtable to discuss ways the university can provide assistance to Alaska farmers operating or planning to operate CSAs.

The CSA roundtable will be held Thursday, March 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the UAF campus in room 204 of the Butrovich Building.

Possibilities include creating a campus CSA as a research/teaching tool; research directions appropriate to curriculum/degree focus on CSAs or similar marketing models; exploring the needs of farmers operating CSAs; forming an Alaska CSA Operators’ Network; and other ideas. Participants are encouraged to offer a short presentation about their farm.

Lunch will be provided, and telephone conferencing will be available. For details, please contact Deirdre Helfferich, fndah3@uaf.edu or 907-474-6923 or Nancy Tarnai, fnnjt@uaf.edu, or 474-5042.
