The University of Alaska Museum of the North will hold its 15th annual military appreciation family day on Saturday, Nov. 14 from noon to 4 p.m. The event is free for all community members, including active duty military member, veterans and civilians.
Families can explore the museum’s five exhibit galleries, including the special exhibit "Ascension: Exploring the Art of Denali." Gallery activity sheets will help children and families get the most out of their museum visit.
Visitors will also be able to see the museum’s ichthyosaur, which was recovered from the western Brooks Range in 2002 with help from the "Sugar Bears" Chinook helicopter battalion at Fort Wainwright and watch a video showing the excavation and the specimen’s transport to Fairbanks. Athabascan artists Denise Hardesty and Kathleen Meckel will demonstrate beadworking. For holiday shoppers, the Museum Store will offer a 10 percent discount all day.
The museum has held its military appreciation family day for 15 years to honor the military community in Interior Alaska for its support of the museum and its programs. The event has been supported by Wells Fargo since 2003. Wells Fargo mascot Jack the Dog will be greeting visitors to the museum on Saturday.
