Author to speak on race, gender and privilege

Peggy McIntosh, a nationally recognized expert on race and gender relations, will deliver a lecture on unearned race and gender privilege Thursday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Wood Center Ballroom at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The lecture is free and open to the public, however seating is limited.

McIntosh is the associate director of the Wellesley College Center for Research on Women. She is the author of articles on curriculum change, women’s studies and systems of unearned privilege. She is best known for writing the 1989 article "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack," which helped bring the idea of privilege into discussions of gender, race and sexuality. The essay, along with her other work, helped create the concept of white privilege, which has since influenced anti-racist theory and practice, as well as other activist movements.

McIntosh will be in Fairbanks as part of International Education Week at UAF, which includes events designed to expose the UAF community to diverse cultures, countries and new ideas. This lecture is sponsored by the Nanook Traditions Board, LIVE Program, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Women’s Center, the UAF sociology department and the student activities office.
