Alaska Marine Science Symposium to bring ocean experts together

Hundreds of marine scientists, fisheries experts and oceanographers from around the world will converge in Anchorage next week for the 2010 Alaska Marine Science Symposium.

The symposium begins Monday, Jan. 18, at 1:30 p.m. and continues until 5 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 21. It will be held at the Captain Cook Hotel. Sen. Mark Begich will provide the opening remarks.

The program includes about 75 short presentations on subjects ranging from plankton to polar bears. Presentation topics include climate change and sea ice, the effects of lingering oil from the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill on sea otters and sea ducks, king crab aquaculture and ocean acidification.

The program is organized by region with Gulf of Alaska talks on Monday and Tuesday, arctic talks on Wednesday and Bering Sea talks on Thursday.
