The ice rink at the Patty Center on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus is closed due to a refrigerant leak discovered Tuesday afternoon.
Rink manager Tom Robinson discovered the leak after noticing a small hole in the ice. The leak is under the ice and makes the rink unusable. UAF Facilities Services staff members began removing the ice Wednesday afternoon and plan to find and repair the leak as quickly as possible. The 1,300-seat ice arena was built in 1979. It will be closed until further notice.
The Patty Ice Arena is used by a large number of community groups. The university has informed those groups of the closure and referred them to other local rinks for possible rescheduling. Facilities Services staff members also contacted local rinks to inform them of the closure.
More information about Patty Ice Arena schedules is available online at http://www.uaf.edu/fs/pattyice.html.
