University of Alaska Fairbanks TRiO programs will join their counterparts across Alaska and the nation Saturday, Feb. 27 for a day of community service to celebrate National TRiO Day and promote awareness of TRiO programs.

TRiO programs help first-generation, low-income and disabled students complete four-year degrees. TRiO programs at UAF include Upward Bound, which provides an early college experience, and Student Support Services, which offers tutoring, mentoring, social and cultural engagement, and access to educational resources.

Students from both programs will spend the day volunteering at the Interior AIDS Association.

In addition to the day of service, UAF will recognize low-income, first-generation and disabled students who are succeeding in college during an awards banquet Tuesday, March 2 from 5-7:30 p.m. in the Wood Center Ballroom.

The awards banquet will include recognition of high-achieving middle school, high school and college students, an address by Tanana Chiefs Conference President Jerry Isaac and a student speaker. UAF TRiO programs will also honor a TRiO alumnus and a community member who has been an advocate for TRiO students.

Those interested in attending should contact Upward Bound or Student Support Services directors for an invitation.
